Owl Post #197

Inspired by The Story Siren's In My Mailbox, Owl Post allows us bloggers to showcase the books we've bought, won or received throughout the week and is hosted by Brodie over at Eleusinian Mysteries. We all know that the Owl Post is the fastest way to send and receive mail and they certainly make me happy every time they drop a book off.

Hello lovelies and welcome to another Owl Post!

Not only am I a bit of a book hoarder and own sooooo many books I don't know how I'll ever read all of them, but I can't resist a sale; which is why this week I have a lot of books I bought to share with you. The first photo is of books I scored from Kinokuniya and cost me less than $35--and that includes two hardbacks AND free shipping :)

I Bought:
 - The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead
I enjoy Richelle Mead's books but have only just gotten a copy of this. Can't wait to read it!

- Gemina by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
I still have the first book in this series, Illuminae to read too but I LOVE Amie Kaufman and am sure I will adore it when I finally get around to it; just have to find the time.

- The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness
I recently heard this series was being made into a tv series and I've heard great things about it so I decided to give it ago. Unfortunately Kinokuniya cancelled my order of Book 1 & 2 because they ran out of stock so I now only have this third book, but I'll get the first two eventually.

- Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
I ADORE Laini Taylor and I'm stoked to have waiting to get a copy of this book--this hard back cost me $9. Nine freaking dollars--yes please!

- Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Caraval seems to be one of the hottest debuts this year and I'm looking forward to reading it. LOVE this hardback copy I scored for only $8 :) It's so beautiful!

- City of Light by Keri Arthur
A few weeks ago I found a second hand copy of the second book in this series for $2 in perfect condition, so now I have book one so I can began this series :)

- Ash and Quill by Rachel Caine
I LOVED the first two books in The Great Library series and thought I might have received a copy of Ash and Quill for review. Obviously I didn,t so I had to get one for myself! Can't wait to read this!

- The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson
I read the first book in this Shades of London series a few years ago and enjoyed it. I haven't continued on with the series but this book was $4 so I thought I'd finally get myself a copy of the sequel.

- Stormbringers by Philippa Gregory
Stormbringers is the second novel in the Order of Darkness series. I don't have a copy of book one, however this hardback was only $3.50, sooooooo ;)

My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster
-   Forged by Desire by Bec McMaster
These are books three and four in the London Steampunk (I also own book one) and Bec is attending an author event next year that I'm thinking of attending. I'm still unsure if I definitely will or not, but just in case, these were on sale ($6 each) so I decided to get copies in preparation; just in case!

And that's me this week! I treated myself to plenty of goodies!
What did the owls drop off for you?

In her own words: Hi. I’m Micalea. Ma-call-e-uh. Weird name, I know. My mom must’ve known I was going to be odd even in the womb. I’ve written a lot of books. Like a lot. Don’t ask me how many, I don’t remember at this point. I have an unhealthy addiction to Diet Coke but I can’t seem to break the habit. I listen to way too much music and hedgehogs have taken over my life. Crazy is the word that best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Book Shelf: Size Matters (A Perfect Fit #1) by Alison Bliss

The rules of (fake) engagement . . .
Leah Martin has spent her life trying to avoid temptation. But she's sick of low-fat snacks, counting calories, and her hyper-critical mom. Fortunately, her popular new bakery keeps her good and distracted. But there aren't enough éclairs in the world to distract Leah from the hotness that is Sam Cooper - or the fact that he just told her mother that they're engaged . . . which is a big, fat lie.

Sam sometime speaks before he thinks. So what started out as defending Leah's date-ability to her judgmental mother soon turned into having a fiancee! Now the plan is to keep up the fake engagement, stay "just friends," and make Leah's family loathe him enough to just call the whole thing off . But Sam has an insatiable sweet tooth, not only for Leah's decadent desserts but her decadent curves. Her full lips. Her bright green eyes. Yep, things aren't going quite according to plan. Now Sam has to convince Leah that he's for real . . . before their little lie turns into one big, sweet disaster.

Review:

Size Matters is the first novel in Alison Bliss’s A Perfect Fit series and is a fresh and flirty contemporary romance perfect for those who love their romance novels threaded with humour and fun.

Curvaceous beauty Leah Martin is the owner of a successful bakery and no stranger to temptation. She’s spent her life fighting the treats and deserts she’s so good at creating, and consuming, as well as the expectations of those in her life who are not happy about her weight. Enter contractor Sam, a man whose hotness gets Leah’s blood pumping….and someone who just told her mother that they’re engaged, which is absolutely not true. Sam Cooper doesn’t always think before he speaks, which is probably why he came to Leah’s defence against her nit-picking mother and announced they were engaged; a fact that definitely isn’t true seeing as they only just met. Sure, Sam can’t help but be drawn in by Leah’s delectable curves and delicious desserts, but posing as her fake fiancé was never the plan. Now he and Leah need to do find a way to get out of their fake engagement with both their reputations intact, but when their plan to convince Leah’s family that Sam is a terrible guy and can't possibly the right man for their daughter begins to backfire, will Leah and Sam realise that they may just have something together after all? Or will both be left unsatisfied?

As someone who has never been stick thin in her life, Size Matters appealed to me straight away for its curvaceous heroine and important themes. Tackling weight issues is never an easy gig, but I liked the way in which Alison Bliss explored it while still managing to keep things fun and sweet. Size Matters may be my first novel by Alison Bliss, but it definitely won’t be the last as I was won over by the fun and entertaining storyline within this easy to follow and enjoy novel.

Unfolding through both Leah and Sam’s varying POV’s, Size Matters introduced two characters who were both likable and a romance that was really sweet. Sam was a funny but sexy male lead and I understood Leah’s insecurities on a deeper level. I could understand where she was coming from having experienced similar fears and uncertainties in the past myself. Emphasizing with the heroine like this only made me cheer for her more as she finally stood up for herself and got her man.

Overall, Size Matters was a light (no pun intended!) but all-round fun novel to read. It was something you could sit back and relax with and not take too serious, while also being full of humour, sensuality and romance. I look forward to reading the next one!

Review:

Seducing the Defendant is the second instalment in Chantal Fernando’s Conflict of Interest series and is another passionate, romantic and chemistry filled story that will sweep you up into a stellar romance with a heart-wrenching ending!

Jaxon Bently is a partner in a prestigious law firm and one of the most sought after criminal attorneys in the country. Known for his abilities to win every case, Jaxton is considered the best of the best, which is why he finds himself approached by Scarlett Reyes, a woman accused of killing her police officer husband. All the evidence points towards Scarlett’s guilt, but when Jaxon meets his beautiful client, he can’t help but believe her innocence. Scarlett Reyes can’t believe her estranged husband is still tormenting her, even from beyond the grave. Having finally escaped his grasp, she thought her future was looking up, only to now be accused of his murder. Hardened lawyer Jaxon may be her own hope, but with the evidence not in her favour and her husband’s colleagues determined to see her convicted of his death, will Jaxon and Scarlett be able to uncover the truth about his murder? Or will an innocent woman go to prison for a crime she didn’t commit?

Chantal Fernando is back with another deeply sensual and engaging novel in her attorney series with Seducing the Defendant. Taking readers once again into her Wind Dragons MC spin-off world, Fernando features two likable  and easy to follow characters in Jaxton and Scarlett. We had previously met Jaxton in book one, Breaching the Contract, so it was nice to see him front and centre this time around.

Personally, I’m very much a fan of all the characters in this series. Scarlett and Jaxton were both easily likable and down to earth individuals who had a sexy and often sweet relationship with each other. I liked how Chantal Fernando developed their story and gave them a great relationship; they just complimented each other so nicely—they were effortless.

Plus, I adore all the minor characters who I’m looking forward to following down the track. Hunter, Callum, Riley, even Gwen all intrigue me and I’m hoping to see them feature in their own stories. Even the receptionist Yvonne is someone I’d love to see more of. Demon stole my heart in Seducing the Defendant too and will have it for a long time, even though Fernando chose to write the story the way she did.

Addictive and easy reading, Seducing the Defendant is a novel I just devoured. Emotional and heartbreaking too, I can’t wait to read the third novel as soon as it comes out. Chantal Fernando never fails to hook me from beginning to end—bring on book three!

Blog Tour: Wolves & Roses by Christina Bauer- Excerpt & Giveaway

Welcome to the blog tour for Wolves & Roses by Christina Bauer thanks to Xpresso Book Tours. Yesterday I posted my review of this very fun and promising book and today I have an excerpt and giveaway to share with you.
_________________________________

"If Janet Evanovich teamed with a young adult, fairy-tale author like Marissa Meyer (the Lunar Chronicles) or Alex Flinn (Beastly), the result might be something like Christina Bauer’s Wolves and Roses.." --Blue Ink Review

Seventeen-year-old Bryar Rose has a problem. She’s descended from one of the three magical races—shifters, fairies, or witches. That makes her one of the Magicorum, and Magicorum always follow a fairy tale life template. In Bryar’s case, that template should be Sleeping Beauty.

“Should” being the key word.

Trouble is, Bryar is nowhere near the sleeping beauty life template. Not even close. She doesn’t like birds or woodland creatures. She can’t sing. And she certainly can’t stand Prince Philpot, the so-called “His Highness of Hedge Funds” that her aunties want her to marry. Even worse, Bryar’s having recurring dreams of a bad boy hottie and is obsessed with finding papyri from ancient Egypt. What’s up with that?

All Bryar wants is to attend a regular high school with normal humans and forget all about shifters, fairies, witches, and the curse that Colonel Mallory the Magnificent placed on her. And she might be able to do just that--if only she can just keep her head down until her eighteenth birthday when the spell that’s ruined her life goes buh-bye.

But that plan gets turned upside down when Bryar Rose meets Knox, the bad boy who’s literally from her dreams. Knox is a powerful werewolf, and his presence in her life changes everything, and not just because he makes her knees turn into Jell-O. If Bryar can’t figure out who—or what—she really is, it might cost both her and Knox their lives… as well as jeopardize the very nature of magic itself.

FAIRY TALES OF THE MAGICORUM
1. Wolves And Roses (Fall 2017)
1.5. Moonlight and Midtown (Spring 2018)
2. Shifters And Glyphs (Fall 2018)

Perfect for readers who love young adult books, contemporary fantasy, fairy tales, satire/comedy, paranormal romance, fairies, magic users, shapeshifters, and coming of age stories.

From Wolves & Roses.....

Nothing in this rickety old elevator is solid metal. The grid-like walls seem about as sturdy as a chain-link fence. And the door looks like it could crumple any second. My pulse races. Knox starts pulling on some levers along the ceiling, and the elevator lurches to life. I’m not going to lie; at this point, I freak out like a total sissy.

Without even thinking about it, I wrap my arms around Knox’s waist, bury my nose in his neck, and squeeze my eyes shut. “Tell me when it’s over.”

He lets out a rumbling chuckle. “I will.”

A few seconds pass during which I dig my nails into Knox’s back. “Why aren’t we moving?”

“We’re, uh, stuck.”

Something about his words just smell off to me, although I can’t imagine why I’m smelling sentences. “You’re totally lying.”

“Well, yeah.” He wraps his right arm around me, resting his heavy palm on the small of my back.

Uh-oh. I’m alone in a broom-closet-elevator thing with Knox. My body is pressed against his very firm and super-rugged self. Worst of all, he smells unbelievably amazing. I try to firm up my resolve. This is the part where I tell him he’s a jerk and I step away.

Maybe I slap him on the cheek like in an old-time movie.

Or, I could at least yell at him to start the stupid elevator again.

But I do none of those things. Standing here and being held really is simply way too nice.

Knox lowers his left arm from the levers in the ceiling. His fingertips brush along my jawline while his thumb runs across my lower lip. My insides flip-flop at his touch, and it’s not necessarily a bad feeling.

Little by little, Knox guides my face upward so I’m no longer nuzzling his neck, but staring into his eyes. He has these ice-blue irises. I never noticed before, but there’s a lot of gold in them as well.

“I want to kiss you, Bry.” His voice is a deep rasp that’s so strong I feel it in my chest, too.

I try to think of something romantic and magical to say. After all, I’m pretty sure I’m about to have my first kiss. It feels like there should be some ceremony. Instead, all I can think about is how Knox has a really yummy-looking mouth. So all my plans for verbal fireworks go out the window.

I only whisper a single word. “Okay.”

Our lips meet in the barest touch. Excitement zings through me. I fist the fabric of Knox’s T-shirt. Someone growls, and I think it might be me, which is super-weird. Although I’ve never done this before, so maybe growling is totally normal. I could not care less either way
because now we’re both opening our mouths as we move past the gentle brushing stuff. I’m not going to lie. It feels amazing. Knox angles my head, and I go with his lead. His tongue licks along my bottom lip, and my knees turn wobbly beneath me.

For the record, I really wish I had started kissing earlier in life. Because if this is what I’ve been missing out on? I’m downright nuts. Some kind of connection forms between us. It’s so intense it could even be supernatural. My blood heats in ways I never imagined.
