Book Shelf: Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling #12) by Nalini Singh

Step into New York Times bestseller Nalini Singh’s explosive and shockingly passionate Psy-Changeling world…

A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained bloodred.
A woman whose very existence has been erased.
A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.
A deadly price that must be paid.
The day of reckoning is here.

From “the alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist) comes the most highly anticipated novel of her career—one that blurs the line between madness and genius, between subjugation and liberation, between the living and the dead.

Review:

Heart of Obsidian is Nalini Singh’s twelfth Psy-Changeling novel and this time tells the tale of Kaleb, a character whose story has been slowly building for some time and who has constantly left readers scratching their heads at his motives.

Former Psy Councilor Kaleb Krychek is a Cardinal TK of incomparable powers. Known for his power and dangerous abilities, everything Kaleb has done in the last seven years has been to find the woman lost to him all those years before. Every shocking act, every secret he has kept has been solely focused on discovering who took the only friend he ever had. And nothing will stop him now that he finally has him within her grasp. Sahara Kyriakus of the NightStar clan has been in total isolation since she was kidnapped as a sixteen year old girl. Retreating into herself in an effort to protect her already fragile mind, Sahara finds herself rescued by a mysterious stranger, who both tempts and treats her like a precious gem, even though he oozes danger from every pore. Sahara knows Kaleb is the last person who should make her feel safe, but with so many memories of her past missing and someone continuing to hunt her in the present, Sahara finds herself falling for the most dangerous man in the Net…..

Initially, I struggled with Heart of Obsidian. I’ve always been a little bit intrigued with Kaleb—he’s someone who you’ve never really known what his intentions were and I’ve tossed up a lot whether I consider him good or evil--but in the beginning of this novel, I really struggled to connect with both he and Sahara. That being said, while I eventually found myself getting sucked in as we learnt about Kaleb and Sahara’s history and connection, this wasn’t the easiest of Psy-Changeling novels for me to be swept up into.

That being said, Heart of Obsidian was actually a very explosive novel. Pure Psy up their campaign and actions in this instalment with a lot of dangerous situations and tragedies triggered and caused by their organization. I found that this complimented the storyline involving Kaleb and Sahara’s romance and endeared Kaleb to me as he attempted to assist when he wasn’t being forced to.

Kaleb and Sahara are very different people, but after some initial hang-ups really do suite each other well. I’ll admit, having now read this tale, my heart bleeds for Kaleb, and the child he was when he began being mistreated and "trained" by a psychopath. He never knew kindness and love and pretty much had no hope…..if not for the kind-hearted and sweet little girl who never saw him as anything but her friend, her Kaleb. And someone she cared about enough to worry about and to go out of her way to be a friend too.

Through a series of memories both from Sahara and Kaleb’s POV’s, Singh allows us to understand how their friendship came about and the effect it had on Kaleb’s life. Sahara taught him about love at its most basic point, and the innocent way in which she became his everything was really beautiful to witness. They were children; Kaleb had never known about play or friendship. Sahara gave him that without limitations or restrictions; unconditional love. As I said; beautiful. It just made everything he’s ever done appear in a new light for me. Even though he didn’t believe he was capable, Kaleb loved Sahara so completely that he dedicated a huge chunk of his life simply to getting her back and rescuing her. It was lovely to finally understand.

As children Kaleb and Sahara developed a bond that, once reunited, developed into something sensual and passionate. They both discovered attraction and sexual desire with each other; giving into their wants and engaging in some passionate love scenes. I liked that as a Psy, one very close to Silence, Kaleb began to want things with Sahara. Only her. And it was the same with her. It was sweet.

Heart of Obsidian marks a big development in this series. I won’t give away spoilers but it’s a big moment in Psy history and I really appreciated the part Kaleb plays. Nalini Singh answers some questions we’ve had for a while, but also leaves us as her devoted readers wondering what will happen in the next chapter of the series.

Having enjoyed this instalment of the Psy-Changeling series after I got over my initial unease, I can’t wait to read the next couple of novels that follow Arrow’s Aden and Vasic and see what new branch of her world Singh plans to wow us with next!
