Book Shelf: Sword (Le Fay #2) by Realm Lovejoy

Evil lurks. Camelot sits, vulnerable. The fate of a future king hangs in the balance.

After surviving a string of brutal trials, sixteen-year-old Morgan le Fay is an official member of Camelot. But beneath its shining façade, Camelot is a crumbling government where loyalties are divided.

Nobody believes Morgan’s suspicions that enemies are closing in. Prince Arthur, a boy more interested in playing video games than ruling, will not listen to her, and neither will Lancelot, Camelot’s head of security. Even Morgan's friend Merlin refuses to take action.

When Morgan discovers that someone is plotting to assassinate the future king, she must take her destiny—and his—into her own hands. With the sword Excalibur beckoning in the distance, Morgan embarks on a seemingly impossible mission. And before her journey ends, everyone will know what she is truly capable of . . .

Review:

Sword is the second book in the Le Fay series by Realm Lovejoy and is even better than its predecessor, giving the first novel a run for its money in the high stakes department and taking readers on an exciting adventure from beginning to end!

Morgan le Fay managed to survive the brutal tests that saw her become an official member of Camelot. She may not have been chosen as the Maven with the job going to Merlin, but Morgan is still in service to the royal family, even if she believes there are suspicious things going on in Camelot. When new evidence comes to light and knowing no one who shares her suspicions is willing to help, Morgan takes drastic actions to protect Prince Arthur---going so far as to kidnap the young royal.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series Henge when I read it last year and was excited to have the chance to continue on with Morgan’s journey. Realm Lovejoy continues to detail Morgan’s story in spectacular fashion, and ensures readers will be sucked in from the very beginning of Sword. Fast paced, exciting and sensationally detailed, Lovejoy twists and weaves things together expertly and kept me hooked from the opening chapter.

There’s some fantastic storyline developments in this instalment, as well as a lot of danger for Morgan to face. As with the previous book, motives where other characters are concerned are always unclear, and just who can be trusted is always something to think about. Personally I love the kind of mystery and magic that is found in this series and can’t commend Lovejoy enough for how she’s writing the series so far!

Morgan is headstrong, vocal and not afraid to do what she feels is right. This means she often takes big chances and big risks, but you have to love a heroine who knows her own heart and follows it. Morgan has a secure definition of right and wrong, but isn’t afraid to break rules. Basically I think Morgan is really kick-ass and am loving following her so farshes my kind of gal!

There’s a lot of change within this novel with Morgan’s relationships with the other characters, especially with some unexpected news coming to light. Personally I’m interested to see what happens between Morgan and Merlin in the future, but considering what happens between her and Lancelot, Realm Lovejoy obviously isn’t afraid to mix things up. Morgan’s father Gorlis and Guinevere are strong supporters as ever, and Prince Arthur starts to show real substance in this novel.

With the ending shocking for a number of reasons, Realm Lovejoy concludes Sword at an interesting moment. I for one can’t wait to see what happens to Morgan next and I’ll be keeping my eye out for the next book as soon as it’s released!

Thanks to Xpresso Book Tours, I'm participating in the Book Blitz for The Prophecy of Shadows by Michelle Madow. Today I have an excerpt from this awesome sounding novel and the tour wide giveaway to share. Enjoy!
________________________________

Filled with magic, thrilling adventure, and sweet romance, Elementals is the first in a new series that fans of Percy Jackson and The Secret Circle will love!
When Nicole Cassidy moves from sunny Georgia to gloomy New England, the last thing she expects is to learn that her homeroom is a cover for a secret coven of witches. Even more surprisingly ... she's apparently a witch herself. Despite doubts about her newfound abilities, Nicole is welcomed into this ancient circle of witches and is bedazzled by their powers--and, to her dismay, by Blake--the school's notorious bad-boy.

Girls who get close to Blake wind up hurt. His girlfriend Danielle will do anything to keep them away, even if she must resort to using dark magic. But the chemistry between Blake and Nicole is undeniable, and despite wanting to protect Nicole from Danielle's wrath, he finds it impossible to keep his distance.

When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole, Blake, Danielle, and two others in their homeroom are gifted with mysterious powers. But the comet has another effect--it opens the portal to the prison world that has contained the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes and attacks Nicole and Blake, it's up to them and the others to follow the clues from a cryptic prophecy so that they can save their town ... and possibly the world.

From The Prophecy of Shadows.....

“I heard that you and your friends don’t like humans very much,” I began, watching Blake in the hope that the question wasn’t too personal. “Is that true?”

He kept focused on the road, his jaw muscles tight. “It’s not that we don’t like them,” he said simply. “But we are more powerful than humans. Is it so bad to see them as weak?”

“It’s not their fault that they don’t have powers,” I said. “We’re not any more deserving than they are. We didn’t do anything special to be like this. It’s just the way we were born.”

“It’s different when you’ve grown up knowing about what you can do,” he said. “Humans are weak. We’re powerful. Think of it like … natural selection.”

I looked out the window, not wanting to hear any more. Because it just reminded me that Blake only liked me because of my powers. He wouldn’t have noticed me at all if I were normal.

Spotlight: Crimson Earth by Anna Soliveres- Excerpt

In 2014 I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Anna Soliveres debut novel Violet Storm, and now I'm super excited about the release of it's sequel, Crimson Earth. Violet Storm was a great read and I have high hopes of Crimson Earth!
___________________________

Aeva Storm finally has the answers she’s been looking for since the night she was struck by lightning. She knows who she is—and more importantly, what she is. But her secret isn’t hers alone to keep, and some of those who know the truth will do anything to control her.

In the sequel to the acclaimed Violet Storm, Aeva must decide how far she’ll go to protect her identity and to find her missing sister in a world she hardly recognizes. She must embrace her new life—and her strange new body—if she hopes to save the only place she and her family have left to call home.

Filled with action, mystery, and heartbreak, Crimson Earth finds Aeva, Ruven, and Karth on opposing sides as the war between The False Alliance and the Monarchy draws near.

Can they band together to fight against the evil threatening the City? Or will they destroy each other before the war has even begun?

Add on Goodreads or check out my review of book one, Violet Storm!

From Crimson Earth.....

Ruven’s lips twitch into the distant echo of a smile—a rare sight these days. He moves to the other side of the wide corridor. He’s hard to ignore. As a whole, Ruven is jarringly present in the space he occupies. Mostly because of his unique modifications, making him incomparable to any other human on this earth. And when those crimson eyes lock onto you… it’s like being ensnared in a dream you’re not sure will turn into a nightmare.
Since I woke up from my near-death experience, there never seems to be enough distance between us, and yet, for some reason he’s always around. Some people are gluttons for punishment.
Don’t pretend you don’t care about him, Aeva.
How the heckfire am I supposed to do anything else? These days, my entire life revolves around pretending. Before the Monarch died, Ruven had been my friend—my closest ally. And then things got a little too intense. He told me how much he cared about me, and that he wanted more than just friendship. But I struggled with the idea of us, because there were more pressing issues occupying my mind—and my heart. I couldn’t give him what he wanted and now things have changed between us.
I hate it.
I hate it for so many reasons that just thinking about it makes me want to hurt someone.
There is no changing the past. No changing how I feel.

Anna Soliveres has always been a storyteller but it wasn't until her early twenties when she began writing novel length works. The result was an enthusiasm to get better at the craft until her work could be shared with the world. As with all writer's, she is an avid reader. You'll likely find Anna lost behind a novel or nonfiction work. If she's not reading, she's probably binge-watching a series on Netflix or Amazon, in search of inspiration, taking her imagination beyond words and into the realm of visual storytelling. She grew up (or rather, remained forever ensnared) in the world of anime, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Harry Potter, and all things with "Super" or "Hero" in the title. Book Shelf: A Corner of White (The Colours of Madeleine #1) by Jaclyn Moriarty

Madeleine Tully lives in Cambridge, England, the World - a city of spires, Isaac Newton and Auntie's Tea Shop.

Elliot begins to write to Madeleine, the Girl-in-the-World - a most dangerous thing to do for suspected cracks must be reported and closed.

But Elliot's father has disappeared and Madeleine's mother is sick. Can a stranger from another world help to unravel the mysteries in your own? Can Madeleine and Elliot find the missing pieces of themselves before it is too late?

Review:

A Corner of White is the first book in acclaimed Australian author Jaclyn Moriarty’s Colours of Madeleine series is a deeply captivating and unique fantasy tale. Vividly told and unparalleled, A Corner of White is a stellar addition to the Australian YA fiction genre.

A Corner of White introduces readers to Madeline Tully, a fourteen year old girl who lives in Cambridge, England with her mother and Elliot Baranski a fifteen year old boy who lives in the Kingdom of Cello. Cello and the World have existed side by side for many years without interaction but it’s not until a crack opens up between the two that Madeline and Elliot begin corresponding through a series of letters exchanged between them and soon begin to form and unlikely friendship.

In all honesty it took me about halfway through A Corner of White to really get into the story. Told through third person and switching back and forth between the Kingdom of Cello (pronounced Chello) and the real World it was easy to get confused as Moriarty began to explain the workings of her detailed world. The characters within Moriarty’s tale have very unique voices and ways of viewing the world—which I ended up loving—but it did take me a while to connect; especially in the beginning when it seemed like Madeline and a few of the other characters were pottering around about nonsense and things that didn’t seem important.

That being said, after a while I began to appreciate seeing the day to day lives of our characters and see the issues they were going through and attempting to overcome. I found Cello to be a vivid and compelling world that mixes elements of modern technology with magic and mystery. Jaclyn Moriarty really has created something unique and different with Cello and introduces readers to different concepts I’ve yet to see before in books. I can’t even begin to accurately explain Colours and have myself accurately describe their workings and history, but within this novel and within the world of Cello it all makes sense.

Learning about the cracks within the kingdom and their meanings, the Butterfly Child, the Farm and all the different Colours---Moriarty drags you kicking and screaming into her lush world and with the turn of every page I found myself liking Madeline and Elliot more and beginning to dream of the day they may meet. I began to care about Elliot’s search for his father and the truth behind his disappearance, the town of Bonfire that Elliot calls home and all the eccentric, alluring characters who live within it, and I honestly wanted to know more……

Moriarty ages her main characters young (fourteen and fifteen respectably) and I can only hope this is a precursor for growth in future books, but even their voices seemed older at times. Madeline in particular has a powerful way of seeing the world and expresses really deep and meaningful thoughts about science, literature and life in general. Elliot on the other hand is a heartthrob in his hometown and is intelligent, athletic, kind and determined—all qualities that make him enjoyable to follow.

Jaclyn Moriarty fills her story to the brim with different characters and I enjoyed seeing their different dynamics and purposes within the tale. I ended up loving the life they gave the world of Cello. With a couple of great twists and surprises at the end of the first book, A Corner of White has me eager to jump straight into the next novel!

Book Shelf: Red Girl, Blue Boy (If Only . . . #5) by Lauren Baratz-Logsted

Enjoy Red Girl, Blue Boy and the other standalone titles in Bloomsbury’s contemporary If Only romance line centered around an impossible problem: you always want what you can’t have!

Sixteen-year-old Katie and Drew really shouldn’t get along. After all, her father is the Republican nominee for President of the United States while his mother is at the top of the Democratic ticket. But when Katie and Drew are thrown together in a joint interview on a morning talk show, they can’t ignore the chemistry between them. With an entire nation tuned into and taking sides in your parents’ fight, and the knowledge that—ultimately—someone has to lose, how can you fall in love with the one person you’re supposed to hate?

This title in the If Only line is a frank and funny romance that shows how sparks fly when opposites attract.

Review:

Red Girl, Blue Boy is the fifth novel in the contemporary If Only series, this time told by author Lauren Baratz-Logsted and is another deeply enjoyable read about wanting what you know you shouldn’t want and really shouldn’t have…..

When I first began reading and reviewing this series, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was looking for a light, contemporary read and the series certainly continuously nails that on the head, but I didn’t expect to find myself eagerly anticipating the release of each instalment and enjoying the different, romantic tales to the extent that I do. I know going into each of the If Only books that I’m going to find a fun, sweet and endearing romance and I’m yet to find a book that hasn’t satisfied.

And Red Girl, Blue Boy is no exception. In this novel, Lauren Baratz-Logsted introduces her readers to Katie Willfield whose father is the Republican nominee in the race for President of the United States, and Drew Reilly, whose mother is his opponent as the face of the Democratic Party. While Katie has spent her life in the public eye and breathes politics, Drew abhors public life and tries to reframe from participating in the circus that is his family's political life. Both couldn’t be more different and their parents opponents, but when sparks fly between Katie and Drew, both teens are about to discover something more powerful than politics……love.

Lauren Baratz-Logsted details Red Girl, Blue Boy through the dual POV’s of both Katie and Drew with chapters switching back and forth between the teens. With the story nicely written, I absolutely loved Katie and Drew! They were both so down to earth and sweet and just downright good characters to follow. Having the story told through both their eyes was perfect—I loved seeing Katie and Drew’s lives as well as their thoughts and feelings on the situations they were in.

Something that made me smile about Katie wasn’t the fact that she was socially awkward---it was the fact she didn’t know she was socially awkward. Here’s a sixteen year old girl happily dressing in pantsuits and picking out china patterns; a sweet, naïve teen who’s never owned a pair of jeans or had friends or much social interaction. Katie was hopeless and clueless and just happily went along with things; having no idea on occasion how she appeared. I found it sweet and endearing; especially when Drew couldn’t help but want to protect her.

As a proud Aussie, I admit I don’t know much about the US presidential election or the campaign in the lead up, but I did enjoy Katie and Drew’s parents and their fictional battle against each other. Lauren Baratz-Logsted does a good joy mixing it together with teenage romance and first love.

Romantic and endearing, Red Girl, Blue Boy was another great If Only instalment and I’m more than ready to dive head first into the next novel!

Book Shelf: Lair of Dreams (The Diviners #2) by Libba Bray

After a supernatural showdown with a serial killer, Evie O'Neill has outed herself as a Diviner. Now that the world knows of her ability to 'read' objects, and therefore the past, she has become a media darling, earning the title 'America's Sweetheart Seer'. There's just one downside - a sham engagement to the irritatingly handsome Sam Lloyd.

But not everyone is so accepting of the Diviners' abilities… and across town, a mysterious sleeping sickness is spreading through Chinatown, leaving dead dreamers in its wake.

Can the Diviners descend into the slumberland and catch a killer?

More info on Goodreads.....

Review:

Lair of Dreams is the highly anticipated sequel to Libba Bray’s stellar novel The Diviners, and is another fast paced, enticing and exquisitely detailed story filled with otherworldly magic, mayhem and discovery.

Readers like myself who have been eagerly awaiting the release of this novel will once again be drawn into 1920’s America and all the glitz, glamour and unending hardships that surrounded those both lucky enough and unfortunate enough to call it home. Bray is back with all her Diviners--Evie, Sam, Jericho, Mabel, Theta, Henry, and includes the new character of Ling Chan whose ability to dream walk like Henry will shape the story and expand on what we already know about the Diviners.

Once again expertly detailed, Libba Bray continues the series in third person, allowing for a sensationally depicted and well-rounded story. Our beloved main characters mingle with those whose purpose within the story isn’t always long or lasting to create a vivid and at times haunting journey. At first I worried about whether I would remember many details from the previous novel considering the three years between releases, but Bray quickly draws you back into the story like you’ve never been away.

Told through the third person, Lair of Dreams follows some very different, intriguing and complex characters. Each have a different ability and role of sorts within the story and Bray continues to interweave their lives. Loyalties, loves and desires are tested and I have to say I like the vast band of characters Bray features. They have a great dynamic individually and when they come together bring an added excitement to the story. Their relationships with each other are all different from besotted lovers, best friends or acquaintances but still manage to captivate with their simplicity and complexity.

There was only one problem I seemed to have with Lair of Dreams, and that was that I was really quite disappointed by Evie’s character in this novel. Everything I came to love about her in The Diviners seemed to be missing in this instalment and instead she came across as a spoiled, conceited and selfish individual who cared only for popularity and fame. I have no doubt Libba Bray has big plans for Evie in the series and that there is a reason for this devolvement, but it didn’t make it any easier to read this book disliking Evie when I had so rooted for her in the first novel. I can only hope there is a bigger purpose for Evie’s attitude and some redemption for her in the future.

Vivid, lyrical and mysteriously haunting, Lair of Dreams is a wonderful follow up to The Diviners and leaves this reader raring for more. I can only hope there isn’t such a long wait once more between instalments as I’m ready to see Evie and the rest of the gang continue on with their journey!

Waiting on Wednesday #120

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on.....

Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell
Releases on: February 2nd 2016

For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home—all because her mother believes that monsters are hunting them. Now these delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. The only saving grace is her best friend, Olivia, who’s coming with them for the summer.

But when Gwen and Olivia are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and taken to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey, Gwen realizes her mom might have been sane all along.

The world Gwen finds herself in is called Neverland, yet it’s nothing like the stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through her fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the roguish young pirate who promises to keep her safe.

With time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But will she be able to save Neverland without losing herself?

Thoughts:
Ah, I love fairy-tale retellings. And this story that plays with Peter Pan looks really good! What can I say? The idea of a roguish pirate (Hook) and a charming hero (Pan) just gets me all excited and ready to read this for myself!

Does Unhooked sound good to you?

Review:

The Commander by Emily Wibberley is a thrilling glimpse into the mind of The Last Oracle leading man and fierce commander, Riece and is a quick and delectable read that fans of the series will simply adore!

As a fan of The Last Oracle series, I was highly excited to devour this short story told through the POV or Riece. Only a chapter long, The Commander details the moment that Riece and Cleo meet in the first book, Sacrificed and is sooooo good.

I love Riece! He is an incredible character who has always been devoted to Cleo and has always stood by her side. The tension and attraction that simmers between them has always been powerful and I loved seeing Riece experience it firsthand during his first meeting with Cleo.

Fast, quick and perfect for fans of this series, The Commander leaves me raring for the next full-length installement in this series!

Happy Monday guys!

I don't have any review books to share with you guys this week, but I did buy some. I swear. Each week I tell myself I'm going to cut down on the buying.....and then I buy more books. LOL! What can I say; Booktopia had a great sale on with free shipping. I originally only wanted one book, but before you know it's $35 dollars later and I have 8 books. Personally I thought I got a great deal :)

I Bought:

- Flying Blind by Deborah Cooke
- Winging It by Deborah Cooke
These are books one and two in The Dragon Diaries Trilogy and I've had book one on my TBR list for a while so I figured why not when I saw they were so cheap. Hope they're good.

- The Almost Girl by Amalie Howard
I loved Amalie Howard's Waterfell and I think this sounds fabulous. Really looking to reading it!

- Dead Rules by Randy Russell
I admit I've heard mixed things about this book, but what can I say....I can't pass up a $2 book.

The Vampire Stalker by Allison van Diepen
This book is one that's been on my TBR list for a while, and it sounds cute--hope to read it soon.

- Once in a Full Moon by Ellen Schreiber
I remember reading a couple of Ellen Schreiber's Vampire Kisses series when I was young. They didn't blow me away, but this book was another cheap one I couldn't help myself with!

- Dreaming Anastasia by Joy Preble
I remember adding this book to mu TBR list years ago because I loved the concept. When I saw it on sale I had to get myself a copy. Hope it lives up to those expectations I had all those years ago.

And that's me this week! A lot of not-so-recent releases.
Any you've read and have thoughts on?
