Book Shelf: Invincible (Chronicles of Nick #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse...

Nick Gautier’s day just keeps getting better and better. Yeah, he survived the zombie attacks, only to wake up and find himself enslaved to a world of shapeshifters and demons out to claim his soul.

His new principal thinks he’s even more of a hoodlum than the last one, his coach is trying to recruit him to things he can’t even mention and the girl he’s not seeing, but is, has secrets that terrify him.

But more than that, he’s being groomed by the darkest of powers and if he doesn’t learn how to raise the dead by the end of the week, he will become one of them...

Review:

I enjoyed this book. I admit it wasn’t as good as the first, but it was still an interesting read. It was slower than the first book, Infinity and did seem to drag on on occasion, but other than that I think it was a good book in what promises to be a fantastic series. Honestly, I love Sherrilyn Kenyon that much that she could write about paint drying and I’d still love it.
I like the way this series builds on the Dark Hunter world. It still holds the basics that make Dark Hunter great, but with its own bits and pieces to take it in a whole different direction. I think its interesting seeing history change in this series. So much of what I’ve come to know in DH is changing in this series. It’s interesting but I do wonder what will happen.

So far Nick has battled zombies and demons, dealt with dead classmates and evil teachers and it’s only the 2nd book! Plus he’s learning to harness and control his powers at a much younger age. Just when it seems like Nick can’t face anything more, something unexpected happens.
Personally, I’m really loving Nick in this book. Being such a prominent DH character too, one that changes oh, so much over the course of that series, it’s so fabulous in this one to see Nick back at his roots. Despite everything he’s been through, he’s always been a good, honourable guy, who wants to do the right thing and has a great soul....and this series is Nick at his sarcastic, witty best. There’s nothing not to love about Nick. Even though he’s had a touch childhood so far, he has morals and integrity and his mum’s his whole world, which I think is the sweetest thing ever.

One of the things that make Kenyon’s books great is the rich cast of supporting characters that litter the pages. Everywhere you turn in this tale is a fabulous character full of life and who just adds so much to the story. Even if they don’t have that big a part, their place within the book just adds to the overall feel.
Two of the most interesting to me are that of Caleb and Nekoda; Nick’s protectors. There’s so much mystery surrounding both of them that it’s impossible not to wonder what’s going to happen involving them in future books.

Obviously we know that Caleb has to protect Nick for whatever reason (one that we don’t yet know) but I really think that what they have is becoming more of a friendship than just a job to Caleb. I think he’s beginning to really like Nick and is clearly starting to act more like a friend than just a body guard. I don’t think he thinks of Nick as just a job anymore.
As for Kody, I really like the way her feelings are changing towards Nick. Again we don’t exactly know who or what she is, nor do we know her reasons for being in Nick’s life, but we do know that whatever that reason may be, Nick isn’t what she was expecting. Whatever her plans are, Nick is not the person she was expecting him to be with his morals and his goodness and he’s beginning to break down her walls and get to her little by little. She doesn’t want him to turn out evil and hopes that he can be saved.

Slow moments aside, this book was another great one by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Most of the time the book just flew by and this ends with a little bit of a cliff-hanger that has we wanting the next book really, really badly.

Rating: **** stars
Source: I bought it
Format: Paperback

Recommend borrow or buy: Buy
Cover: I really don't like this cover. In reality the head of "Nick" fades into the black too much and you literally can't see where one ends and the other begins. Not nice.
